What is Google Algorithm ?

Google Algorithm is a complex system that helps google to find, index, rank and return the most relevant pages for the specific search query or keyword. The web pages that we see on the top of the first page of google is an output of a combination of algorithm, relevance to search query, 200+ ranking factors, location, device and so on.

How Does Google Search Algorithm Works?

There are around 250+ ranking metrics that google algorithm considers while ranking a page on SERP (search engine results page). These metrics broadly divided into 4 key sections:-

  • Relevance:- Google checks the relevancy of a page content to the user’s search query or keyword. The higher the quality & relevant the better the rankings on SERP.
  • PageRank:- It is a system for ranking web pages on SERP. The PageRank of a page is determined by the no. of backlinks. The Higher the no. of quality backlinks the better the PageRank.
  • Trust:- Domain Age is one of the popular trust metrics used by google. Check your domain age!
  • Usability:- Google wants the pages to be attractive, mobile-friendly & load faster. Check your website or webpage mobile-friendliness and loading speed on desktop & mobile.

Passage Indexing:-

  • Name of the Algorithm Update: Passage Indexing
  • Released Date: 10th February 2021
  • Status: Confirmed
  • About: It is a new technology used by google to rank the individual passages from a web page on search results depending upon the search query of the user.
    • NOTE:- Only difference Featured & Passage indexing is relevance. Passage Indexing just consider the relevance of passages to the search query. On other hand featured snippet consider the page’s overall relevance to the search query.

Featured Snippet Duping:-

  • Released Date: 22nd January 2021
  • Status: Confirmed
  • About: Google announced that pages or URLs which appeared as Featured Snippets result would no longer be appearing as traditional organic results.

BERT Rolled out Internationally:-

  • Name of the Update: International BERT Rollout
  • Released Date: 9th December 2019
  • Status: Confirmed
  • About: A Natural Language Processing algorithm internationally in 70 languages.

BERT

  • Name of the Algorithm Update: Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers
  • Released Date: 22nd October 2019
  • Status: Confirmed
  • About: BERT stands for Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers. It is a natural language processing pretraining technique which helps google to understand the context of words in search queries. As per release the algorithm applicable to search only. But, there might be impact on searches conducted via Google assistant.
    • NOTE:- So, what is the difference between BERT & Rank Brain? RankBrain adjusts the search results by looking at the current query and finding similar past queries. It then reviews the performance of the search results for those historic queries. Depending upon it’s analyze rankbrain adjust the rankings of search results. On other hand – BERT looks at the content before and after a word to inform its understanding of the meaning and relevance of that word.

Site Diversity

  • Name of the Update: Site Diversity
  • Released Date: 6th June 2019
  • Status: Confirmed
  • About: This update improves the present SERP Situation, where 2 or more pages rankings from same site on page one. With this update you find mostly one page from one site.
    • NOTE:- This update doesn’t effect all search results. If google feels the results is relevant you might find more pages from same site. Subdomains will be treated as part of the website.

  • About: Google rolled back to normal meta description character limit (i.e 150 – 160), after testing for the 300+ long characters for some time.

Mobile-First Indexing Rollout

  • Name of the Update: Mobile First Indexing
  • Released Date: 26th March 2018
  • Status: Confirmed
  • About: This update uses mobile version of page for indexing and ranking rather than desktop version.
    • NOTE:- Google will notify your website crawler (smartphone or desktop) via Google Search Console.
