Nara Chandrababu Naidu, born on April 20, 1950, in Naravaripalle, near Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh, is a prominent Indian politician and the current Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh. He has held this position multiple times, with his latest term beginning on June 12, 2024.

Early Life and Education

Born into an agrarian family, Naidu pursued his early education in Seshapuram and Chandragiri. He earned a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from Sri Venkateswara Arts College, Tirupati, in 1972, followed by a Master’s degree in Economics from Sri Venkateswara University. During his postgraduate studies, he actively participated in student politics, laying the foundation for his political career. Notably, his early political inclinations were shaped by his agrarian background and the socio-economic challenges faced by his community.

Political Career

Naidu’s political journey began with the Indian National Congress (INC). In 1978, at the age of 28, he was elected as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for the Chandragiri constituency and served as a minister in the state cabinet from 1980 to 1982. During this period, he focused on developmental projects aimed at improving rural infrastructure and agriculture, reflecting his commitment to uplifting rural communities.

In 1982, he joined the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), founded by his father-in-law, Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao (NTR). Naidu played a pivotal role in the party and, in 1995, became the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh after leading a successful internal party coup.

Tenure as Chief Minister

Naidu has served as Chief Minister in four terms: 1995–1999, 1999–2004, 2014–2019, and from June 2024 to the present. His leadership has been marked by a strong focus on economic reforms, information technology advancement, and infrastructure development.

Notable initiatives during his tenure include:

  • Deepam Scheme – Providing LPG connections to women from low-income households.
  • Janmabhoomi Program – Encouraging citizen participation in local developmental activities.
  • Hyderabad’s IT Boom – He is widely credited for transforming Hyderabad into a major IT hub, attracting global technology firms.

In his current term, Naidu has pledged to develop Amaravati as the sole capital of Andhra Pradesh, focusing on rebuilding and enhancing the city’s infrastructure.

National Political Influence

Beyond state politics, Naidu has played an influential role at the national level.

  • In 1996, he served as the convener of the United Front, uniting regional parties to form a non-Congress, non-BJP coalition government at the center.
  • Later, in 1999, he aligned with the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), supporting the BJP-led government.
  • His strategic alliances have positioned him as a key player in national politics, often influencing policy decisions at the center.

Personal Life

Naidu is married to Nara Bhuvaneswari, the second daughter of N. T. Rama Rao (NTR). They have a son, Nara Lokesh, who is actively involved in politics and has held various leadership roles within the TDP and the state government.

His family has deep political roots—NTR, apart from being a legendary actor, was also the founder of the Telugu Desam Party and a former Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh.

Legal Controversy and 2024 Election Victory

In September 2023, Naidu was arrested by the Andhra Pradesh Crime Investigation Department (CID) on allegations of misappropriation of public funds. He was released on bail in November 2023.

Despite these legal challenges, under Naidu’s leadership, the TDP formed an alliance with the Jana Sena Party and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). This coalition secured a sweeping victory in the 2024 state elections, unseating the incumbent government.

Naidu’s 2024 election victory marked a strategic political move, consolidating opposition forces and reaffirming his stronghold in Andhra Pradesh politics.

Legacy and Impact

Throughout his career, Chandrababu Naidu has been recognized for his administrative acumen and vision for technological and economic development. His leadership has left a lasting impact on Andhra Pradesh and Indian politics, particularly in areas such as IT infrastructure, rural development, and governance modernization.
